Not just for the bird lovers and wildlife photographers, thousands of winged creatures from Europe and the Americas are waiting to offer a visual treat to anyone interested in a weekend sojourn at an exotic spot in Vaduvur near Thanjavur.
While it is interesting to explore the unexplored, witnessing this fascinating flock of foreign birds at a local location becomes even more meaningful as it pride of our country and its warm winter waters.
These blithe beings have fluttered high and dry from the far-off skies of the European countries and the US to stay away from the thunderstorms there and to reach here for survival and also relish the tropical warmth. The thousands of morning chirps that echo in this small town of Vaduvur can be are heard miles away, as the winged adults train their young ones in flying and frolicking. Most of these winged visitors are aquatic and decorate the reservoir trees. It is a sure-fire treat for bird lovers and wildlife photographers, and at the heart of the serene sanctuary, is a large lake that attracts at least 40 species of water birds.

Of late, the megabat (fruit bat) population around this lake has skyrocketed. Their numbers have grown in recent years, thanks to conservation efforts. About 2,000 megabats, which are usually larger in size, fly around the sanctuary and have now begun to make the region their new home for their upcoming generation.
A senior official at the sanctuary, Sivamani says, “Local villagers should be more enthusiastic about the sanctuary, and in the upcoming years, the sanctuary will have solar lamps and more viewing points. There is also a plan to use the sanctuary for research on regional birds.”
